Things worked out for this week, we'll see what I do with next week when we get there/

Loki 1x03

Well, this episode kind of takes my fanfic analogy to a new level. It’s pretty boring, but boring in a way that fanfic is boring if it’s not about something you’re interested in. If you’re a Loki fan, this is probably right up your ally, but I’m not so I don’t really get much out of his slow-paced angst.

Along the same lines, the characterization falls flat with me because of which Loki this is. For people who believe Loki was already a woobie then they’re not going to see this as being off in any way. But I look at him and I see Coulson (and, you know, an army of Chitari descending on New York) and I don’t have much sympathy for him. When he talks about Frigga, I am still aware that he’s not the Loki who went through her loss, he just watched it on replay (preplay?). It gives me more insight into the Loki who died in IW, but it doesn’t make me like this one any more.

And definitely any time he seems upset at death and destruction around him I want to punch him. And also the writers. Because it would be one thing if I thought this was Loki realizing the error of *his* ways, *his* choices, and realizing that hey maybe planetary destruction isn’t a great thing. But it feels entirely like the writers aren’t willing to have him be amoral and entirely self-centered. When I pick up instantly on the implications of saying that *no one* gets off the moon means that the Ark is going to fail, then Loki should definitely be acting on that premise; or him not being okay with it should make the character work what’s focused on.

Again, if this actually was the Loki who had done things since Avengers I’d be more willing to say ‘I guess the writers think he’s been redeemed,’ whether or not I always agree; as is, I keep coming back to ‘I think you’re just forgetting who this character actually was.’

Now, was I paying too little attention, or did I miss when Sylvie actually named herself? When she woke up and Loki knew her name suddenly I couldn’t remember when he had learned it. Or did he just make it up as a thing to call her?

Also, I can’t tell if it’s my apathy for all things Loki or if they really haven’t done much to establish Sylvie’s character. She clearly not just a minor variation on main-Loki (past or future), and while I can respect not just dumping all her character info at once, I feel like we’re not getting much of the story so far. I don’t dislike her, but I’m not super into her either, and I had kind of thought I could be. At the very least I would respect it more if she was the ‘tricksy but good’ Loki and they let main-Loki be the character from Avengers. Instead they’re writing him as the ‘just misguided’ one while she’s the violent and bad one. And again, Coulson.

Since all I wanted from this series was a way to let May beat up Loki for killing Coulson, I’m not going to forget any time soon that he definitely deserves it.

As a side note, did this episode look really bad to anyone else? Because the virtual backgrounds were really off-putting to me (find a damn quarry to shoot in). Then the final action scene was too much showing off their bag of tricks and announcing it as a set-piece. I did not like it.
