And here we begin a different phase of the SW reviews; it's explained in the review (it in many ways is the review because I didn't have much to say on this one)

Star Wars: The Clone Wars – Part 1: 5x01

Well, this season and set of reviews is off to an odd start. I decided as I watched this episode that I was actually going to do what I’d been thinking about for a while and review this show in terms of story arcs instead of episode by episode. Only to get through this episode and have no idea if it was a standalone or the beginning of a mini arc. Having now done some research it looks like this is the only oddball episode of the season and the rest can be done in order in 3-4 episode chunks. Hence why this season will have a slightly different format to how it’s organized. It just so happens that this episode ends up standing alone. Kind of, that is. I see it listed with later episodes, but I was always going to watch the season in order as I have with the previous seasons.

But having taken about six weeks on my end between ending s4 and starting s5, I had finally worked up the gumption to give this show another go. That lasted about five minutes of the episode before I had to give myself permission to not have to review every episode (thinking this was the start of mini-arc). Because I still don’t like this show very much. I just don’t get the appeal of anything about this show.

The characters are shallow; there is no evolving character relationship to care about; the mythos is a jumbled mess; the animation looked like ass more often than not; it’s morals can be quite askew (although not in evidence this episode); the universe has no depth in spite the fact I know the SW universe does have depth. I just don’t understand what anyone sees in this show at least 75% of the time. It can usually pull out a good episode or mini-arc just in time for me to not call it awful, but I dislike an awful lot of it.

And you know, the only thing in that list I feel bad about is saying the animation looks like ass. Because I know I’ve liked the animation more than I let on in that statement, but this episode looked bad. Why did this episode look so bad and…cartoony? The actions didn’t look smooth, the direction looked like it was trying too hard, most of the time everyone’s face looked like a plastic mask, except at the end when everyone looked overly rendered to the point where the look sloppy. And it only served to remind me of how much I hate the animation on Palpatine; and to question why he looked so evil now when he’s still supposed to not be so overtly bad.

I do have mixed feelings about the music here. It actually stood out in places, which is more that I can say for it a lot of times in the past; but it was also a little much in places. Again, a bit trying too hard to seem better than it is.

And you’ll note how I have nothing to say about the story or the characters here aside from the fact that they basically don’t exist. I truly do not care about these people (and I use people in the loosest sense of the word). I guess I’ll say that I still don’t get the appeal of Maul, but I think that’s implied at this point.

Well, next time I’ll have a set of episodes to review, so I might find something to say during a whole arc. Good thing, because if this is how little I have to say about the season premier, I don’t think I could keep finding things to say about individual episodes.
